As I am around more and more people in recovery, a lot of people feel they have no purpose. And for some reason this Cracker Jack story came to my mind. I'm not sure if I heard it somewhere, or I just made it up myself. But when I was a kid I always wanted a box of Cracker Jacks. I ate all the sweet and a little of the salty. But what I was really after was the prize inside. So I would dump out the rest of the salty and grab my prize. What's left over? An empty box that goes into the trash because we think it has no purpose. Addicts and Mental Health sufferers often feel like that box that gets thrown away as trash. But its really not trash at all. What you actually have now, is a box to store all of your prizes in.
We are establishing a location in Norton, Kan., for people recovering from addiction and mental disease to learn new coping skills through creative arts and creative thinking. Angels and Umbrellas will be a place to dream. People will be encouraged to spread their wings.
Volunteers are encouraged to contact Founder Mitch Lindenman to get involved. Donations are sincerely appreciated. And, #payitforward tshirts will soon be available for purchase, as well. Proceeds and donations help fund art supplies, tools, equipment and operating expenses.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about Angels and Umbrellas, an organization still in its infancy that has the potential to change the face of mental disease and addiction throughout all of western Kansas and beyond.
With so much appreciation, Mitch Lindenman.
My name is Mitch and I have been suffering my whole life with depression, anxiety, ADHD and PTSD-- not combat related. Recently, I was diagnosed as Bipolar. The difficulties I suffer have affected my ability to succeed in the classroom, have affected my ability to socialize and have affected my every-day life as a coworker, a father and a husband. It's also affected my drive to help others in need, who are also recovering and rebuilding.
I'm a dreamer.
I dream of a place where people recovering from addiction, mental disease and depression can go to feel safe, welcomed and encouraged-- a place to be creative. Through my personal journey, I have learned that people are more able to cope and be successful if they are creative. Creativity is a form of communication for people who live inside their heads and can't figure out a way to verbalize their feelings. Creativity is a healthy outlet for emotions, self awareness, and growth.
I want to show the world the beautiful side of mental health and teach people who suffer how to find these unique skills they never knew they had. I want to help people who are like me how to express themselves through poetry or art or music so they don't use their arms as a canvas or a razor as a paintbrush.
Thank you for your interest in Angels and Umbrellas. We are on our way to establishing a nonprofit organization in Norton, Kan. and we sincerely appreciate your support and involvement.
